MGS conference to explore new ways of working

< Back to news listing

Museums and galleries will be encouraged to consider new ways of working in a conference organised by Museums Galleries Scotland. Entitled Collaborating to Compete, the September conference will highlight inspirational examples of best practice in the 21st century. Important themes such as sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, social enterprise, partnership and resilience will be explored. Collaborating to Compete will be a must-attend event for people working in culture, heritage and the third sector.

Joanne Orr, CEO, Museums Galleries Scotland said:
‘Our sector benefits from a marvelously creative and enthusiastic workforce. There are museums out there accomplishing forward-thinking ventures. We wanted to bring like-minded people together to be inspired, encouraged and think about ways to collaborate. Tapping into and harnessing our collective creative energy can strengthen the Scottish museums and galleries sector – not just to overcome current economic challenges but to shape how we work in the future. Together we can create opportunities for positive change.”

Museums Galleries Scotland has also revealed details of their conference keynote speaker – Jeremy Johnson, CEO of Sovereign Hill. Sovereign Hill is an outdoor museum in Victoria, Australia which tells the story of Australia’s gold-rush history. It has successfully operated independent of government funding since opening in 1970 through innovative volunteerism and commercial activities. They attract over 700,000 visitors annually to its day and night exhibits.

Museums Galleries Scotland have issued a call for conference papers. They want to hear from the sector and beyond of innovative and successful examples of new ways of working to overcome challenges. Send titles and short abstracts of around 300 words to conference@museumsgalleriesscotland.org.uk by 5pm on Friday 29 April. All contributions will be acknowledged and then evaluated by a panel.

‘Collaborating to Compete’ takes place at Surgeons Hall, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, Scotland on Friday 16 September 2011.
