NEW BOOKLET ON EVELIX RIVER
THE EVELIX RIVER by R.Graham Park and Struan J.T.Robertson is the latest booklet published by Historylinks Museum, Dornoch. “An account of the evolution of a major East Sutherland river”, it is lavishly illustrated with diagrams and photographs, and describes the historical, geological and geographical development of the river.
In company with other major rivers in East Sutherland, the Evelix River flows south-eastward towards the sea, but then takes an abrupt turn near Dornoch to flow south-westwards into the Dornoch Firth. The booklet examines the reason for this change in direction, involving a detailed examination of the shape of the landscape and its glacial history, and explains the formation of eskers (ridges of stratified sand and gravel) which are a prominent feature of the local landscape.
Publication of the booklet was assisted by a generous bequest from the estate of the late Margaret Randall, who was a long-term supporter of the Dornoch Heritage Society and the museum. Graham Park, an Emeritus Professor of Geology at Keele University, and Struan Robertson, a retired General Practitioner, also produced “Abandoned buildings of the Evelix valley” in 2007. Dr. Robertson, involved with the Heritage Society since the 1980s, undertook early research on the Evelix River in company with Jimmy Bell.
The booklet, which costs £2.99, includes information about the Evelix Trail ~ ten localities to be visited by car, or on foot.
