The Vulcan on display at the Glasgow Garden Festival, 1988

Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) is pleased to announce the successful applicants to their main grant fund for 2011/2013. In total £250,000 of investment has been injected into the sector to develop 19 museum projects.

North Lanarkshire Council has received £21,180 towards the restoration and refurbishment of a replica of the Vulcan. The original Vulcan was a horse-drawn barge which carried passengers between Edinburgh and Glasgow. When it
launched in 1819 it was the first all iron-hulled boat to be constructed.
Over the coming year, a replica of the vessel, made in 1986, will be transformed into a dynamic visitor attraction at Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life. The project, which will see Summerlee Heritage Museum working closely with their local community, forms part of a major redevelopment and regeneration of North Lanarkshire.

Clare Weir, Collections and Exhibitions Manager at North Lanarkshire Council, said:
“This investment from MGS enables us to interpret a key item within the museum’s Recognised Collection of National Significance. The Vulcan will be transformed into an innovative interpretive facility to allow the local community and visitors to Summerlee to engage with an important part of Scotland’s industrial heritage.”

Other projects to benefit include South Ayrshire Council who receives £15,375 to get the planned redevelopment of Rozelle House off the ground. In addition, the MGS investment will help to fund the creation of six temporary positions. These roles will dramatically increase the capacity and skills of the museums in areas in areas such as education, audience development and volunteer management.

Joanne Orr, CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland, said:
“Scotland’s museums and galleries play a vital role in supporting tourism, the economy and local communities. They are a valuable resource, educating people from home and further afield about our past, present and future.”
“We are pleased to be able to fund these inspiring projects which demonstrate the vision of the people working in our museums and galleries throughout the country. We hope that the recently launched National Strategy for Scotland’s Museums and Galleries will encourage more projects like these which work to strengthen connections between museums and the diverse communities which they serve.”

MGS investment encourages the strategic development of the sector. The Scottish museums and galleries sector welcomes 25 million visitors and provides £800 million in value to the Scottish economy.
