Museums Galleries Scotland’s (MGS) series of nationwide roadshows on the National Strategy Delivery Plan launched with a constructive pilot event at the University of Aberdeen on 25 July.
The roadshows allow museums to look at how their current and future work aligns to the National Strategy and how they might contribute to the Delivery Plan. Discussions at the Aberdeen event explored the future role of MGS, as it makes the transition to a National Development Body, and the service offer it will provide for the sector.
One of the Aberdeen event attendees, Neil Firth, Director of the Pier Arts Centre, commented on the day:
“This has been a very good day as we start to focus on the challenges that lie ahead, both for the sector, and for MGS as it takes on its new role. We all know what these challenges are; however, it became very clear that in the face of these, we all maintain a shared ambition to deliver our best, whether we are from an independent, university, or local authority museum or from MGS. So while there are challenges ahead for us all, for me, it was a strong sense of community in our sector which really shone through from our discussions.”
Joanne Orr, CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland, said:
“We consulted with the sector on the development of the National Strategy and these national events are about continuing the dialogue to develop the Delivery Plan with the needs and priorities of the sector firmly in mind.”
“I thank everybody who took the time out of their busy schedules to get involved at our pilot event and we are pleased that the format, which encourages participants to talk strategically while linking to their operational work, was very well received.”
Additional events are in place for Glasgow on 7 August, Dundee on 14 August, Inverness on 28 August, Edinburgh on 4 September and another event in Glasgow on 11 September.
The events are for the lead organisational representative with responsibility for planning in museums and galleries in Scotland. Each event consists of facilitated group discussion sessions and attendees are being sent a questionnaire in advance providing a structure for museums to consider how their current and future work aligns to the National Strategy, and to help identify any gaps and needs.
