Background

In her response, issued December 2010, to the publication of the Museums Think Tank report, Culture Minister (now Cabinet Secretary) Fiona Hyslop said that a healthy museums and galleries sector is vital for Scotland's cultural life.

The recommendations of the Think Tank report included the:

  • Designation of a national body to support the sector and to develop a national strategy for Scotland’s museums and galleries
  • Establishment of a forum of experts to advise the development body on the strategy

The work to develop the strategy began in December 2010. The work on the strategy is being taken forward by the Museum Strategy Group.

In March 2011 three overarching themes for the strategy were announced.

These are to look at:

  1. how the sector can make the best use of available skills and resources.
  2. how the sector can meet its long term ambitions.
  3. the impact and role of museums in society.

Since then there has been intensive engagement and consultation with the sector to continue the development of the National Strategy. See Developing a National Strategy for Scotland’s Museums and Galleries for details.
