‘What’s New 2009’
Recent gifts to Stranraer Museum
Each year Stranraer Museum adds more items to its collection of Wigtownshire material. A selection of objects from 2009 is now on display. Most of these items have been given to the museum by members of the public.

One of the most interesting items received by the museum in 2009 is a model of the ‘MV Princess Victoria’ which was lost in the North Channel in 1953. This fine model was made by the late Alec McIntyre of Stranraer.

Other items on display include a pair of child’s clogs from Barnultoch, Lochans, a girl’s dress made in 1956 by a Stranraer student and a model of a Stagecoach Western bus marked with a Newton Stewart destination. There is also a fine Edwardian photograph of an unknown team posing with the Galloway Football Challenge Shield and another photograph showing the Stranraer fire crew in the 1940s.

One of the oddest pieces is a ticket for the Grand Star Menagerie. Bostock and Wombwell’s Grand Star travelling circus visited Glenluce and Stranraer in 1854 and the ticket probably dates from then.

The most important pieces on display is a military buckle belonging to the Prince Regent’s Royal Ayr and Wigton Militia. This was a volunteer regiment under the command of the Earl of Galloway. It was formed in 1860 and merged with a larger unit in 1881. Local militia items are quite rare and this piece was obtained for the museum with help from the National Fund for Acquisitions.

The new objects will be on show at the Museum throughout the year. Admission is free.
