There is a substantial local history collection including Roman artifacts, coal mining, boatbulding and iron founding - a permanent collection of approximately 13,000 objects. It is impossible for all the objects to be on display at any one time so the vast majority of it is kept in storage. From time to time, objects are removed for display purposes or for conservation work. If an object is not on display it can be made available for private research and education by prior arrangement in writing.
The collection consists of an extensive range of local and social history objects and includes Industrial History and Technology, Home and Domestic Life, Photographs and Documents, and Paintings.
