Steam (and diesel) hauled trains operate a regular public service from Bo’ness Station between early April and end-October. At Birkhill Station is the Birkhill Fireclay Mine, where visitors are taken on tours of the abandoned underground workings. Bo’ness is the home of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, who care for the heritage of the railways of Scotland – there are over 150 locomotives and rolling stock items, and a supporting cast of small objects and archives. Behind Bo’ness Station, the Scottish Railway Exhibition is open on every day that trains run. It offers a 15,000 sq.m display which sets the railway in its Scottish context. The core collection at Bo’ness is Recognised as being of national Scottish significance.
