The permanent exhibitions in the museum include panels and pictures of the “old” Dingwall including a plan of Dingwall in 1822. There are framed pictures of classes from yesteryears of students at Dingwall Primary and Secondary Schools and memoriabilia of the School and Prison which at one time were housed in the Town Hall building in which the museum stands.
One room contains an early 20th Century kitchen area with many of the items displayed still in daily use in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Reconstruction of original smiddy worked by six generations of a local family with a collection of tools and items associated with the work of a blacksmith.
The Military Room has many medals and ribbons on display with artefacts and records pertaining to The 4th Battalion of Seaforth Highlanders, Ross-shires own regiment founded in 1778. It also honours Major General Sir Hector MacDonald who was born on the Black Isle and whose monument was built on the hill overlooking the town.
The latest permanent exhibition is a re-construction of the Council Chambers with paintings of former Provosts of Dingwall and artefacts belonging to their era. In the centre of the room is an impressive oval table and chairs which reflect the room’s former glory. On the wall is a painting “Of the Holy Family” in the school of Titian which was restored in 2000.
An attractive garden area outside leads to the Sandy Macrae Room which provides facilities throughout the season for temporary displays favoured by enthusiasts.
