Alex Miller solves the Riddle of the Stones

18th November 2009

Young Alex Miller of Elgin, was chosen out of over 50 suggetions in a recent competition at Elgin Museum. Volunteer Sheila McColl, had set up a superb display of Neolithic Carved Stone Balls, in one of the upstairs glass display cases. Neil Curtis, Curator at the Marischal Museum, University of Aberdeen, had kindly loaned us several of their Carved Stone Balls, a Gold Torc, and the ‘Birnie’ Bowl. To compliment the display, we decided to run a competition inviting visitors to make suggestions as to the probable use of the Carved Stone Balls. Alex, won a £25.00 book token for his 4 suggestions, which included: “They [Neolithic man] might have also used them for remembering someone who has died, like we have graves”. Well done Alex, and thank you Neil Curtis for the loan of some of your artefacts.
