Our Collection

Chippendale Furniture

This collection consists of over one hundred items of furniture, which were ordered for Paxton House from the firm of Chippendale Haig & Co. in 1774. The holding encompasses dining room, drawing room and bedroom furniture. Among the most significant pieces are an en suite side table, pedestals and urns, a set of twelve chairs, a suite of pier tables and mirrors, two sofas and ten armchairs, a secretaire, various clothes presses, chests of drawers, shaving tables, linen airers, chairs, bedside cabinets and a winged easy chair which retains its original upholstery.

Scottish Regency Furniture

This collection consists of furniture which was made by the Edinburgh-based firm of William Trotter in 1814-15 to furnish the newly completed picture gallery and library.

The holding includes seven table stands made to carry "display" tops of jasper or specimen marbles, two thermes, eight elbow chairs with six small chairs to match, four library chairs, four large Grecian style sofas, two Grecian style couches and two Grecian window seats.

Fine Art

This collection consists of paintings (mainly decorative items or examples of portraiture), prints, drawings and busts which are original to the house. Among these are some of the paintings which formed the large collection once hung in the picture gallery. Many of the portraits and busts are of Home family ancestors or of persons associated with the family. They include a portrait of Patrick Home by Hugh Douglas Hamilton, portraits of Alexander Home of Jardinefield and the 3rd Earl of Marchmont attributed to Allan Ramsay and a full length portrait of Admiral Sir David Milne by Sir Henry Raeburn. Among other items of interest are The Madonna and Christ Child from the circle of Pietro Perugino and a white marble bust of George Home of Paxton by Francis Chantrey.

Applied Art

This collection is made up of furniture from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, costume, textiles, curtains, carpets, ceramics, Sheffield plate, silver, glass and sundry other household items. These items are part of the general furnishing and decoration of Paxton House.

Library

This collection was formed by Patrick Home and George Home. It illustrates the range of interests of the educated 18th century and early 19th century gentry. Additionally, it contains items of literature relating to the lighter taste of George Home's young female cousins.

Ephemera

This collection consists of 18th century gentlemen's costume, items of personalia, domestic items and items relating to the operation of the estates.
