Our Collection

Archaeology

This collection consists almost exclusively of local material with some comparative examples from elsewhere in Scotland and abroad. It is a small collection made up mostly of chance finds and the find material from the excavation at Inverlochy Castle.

Local History

This collection covers a wide range of material mostly concerned with life on the land although there is a considerable amount dealing with the history of Fort William. Domestic utensils and some trades are particularly well represented.

Photographs

This is a small archive of photographs, which relate mostly to Fort William.

Costume and Textiles

About a third of this collection is made up of the Carmichael Collection which was on loan to the Museum and has since been donated.

Fine Art

This is a very small collection which includes work by Sam Bough and Jon Shueler.

Natural History

There is a small collection of stuffed birds and animals of variable quality and some geology. There is also a small collection of lepidoptera.

Library and Archives

This is a large collection which includes family papers, business accounts, minutes of local institutions, maps and in particular, jacobite material.

Archaeology

This collection is mostly made up of local material with some comparative examples from elsewhere in Scotland and abroad. The museum holds the find material from the excavation at Inverlochy Castle, as well as artefacts from other systematic collecting which took place up until the 1920s and more recent chance finds.

Photographs

This is a small photographic archive mostly made up of images of Fort William.

Costume and Textiles

About a third of this collection is made up of the Carmichael Collection which was donated to the museum. It includes very early examples of hard tartan. The rest of the collection includes examples of women's clothing, baby clothes and accessories, as well as tartan samples and clothes.

Musical Instruments

This is a small collections including a set of cauld wind pipes given by Prince Charles Edward to his valet and the Poltalloch harp.

Numismatics

The collection consists of coins, tokens and medals, including a selection of communion tokens, a collection of Jacobite and Hanoverian medallions and a set of Scottish coins.

Arms

This is a small collection of swords, dirks, pistols and firearms.

Applied Art

A large part of this collection is made up of Highland brooches. There are also local pieces of silverware and the Breadblane Gold Dirk.

Jacobites

This collection is based on material that was donated for the 1925 Prince Charles Edward Exhibition. It includes paintings, drawings, miniatures, Jacobite glass, weapons, medallions, memorabilia and a large archive.

Library and Archives

The museum holds a large reference library and archive including Jacobite material, family papers, business accounts, minutes of local institutions and maps.
