The feedback will be delivered to the Museums Think Tank and the Minister for Culture, Fiona Hyslop, to contribute to their discussion on the future of the sector as a whole.
Scotland’s museums and galleries are spread from the UK’s most northerly isle, Unst, to the most southerly part of the Borders. They form the largest visitor attraction sector, welcoming over 25 million visitors and £800 million in value to the Scottish economy. It is also an industry which is largely supported by volunteers – with over 50% of the workforce being voluntary.
Joanne Orr, CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland, said:
“Scotland’s museums and galleries represent the culture and identity of the nation. The wonderful things cared for in their collections tell stories that are crucial to our understanding of who we are. These places sit at the heart of our communities – providing enjoyment, learning and inspiration. Today, we are providing a platform for all these voices to be heard and to feed into the discussion on the future of the sector.
As the membership of Museums Galleries Scotland represents the majority of the sector – from grass roots to national institutions – we believe their feedback is an important contribution that will help the Think Tank meet their task.”
Philip Riddell, Chief Executive of VisitScotland, said:
“With the growing trend in “staycations” and people holidaying at home it is crucial that there are lots of attractions for people to see and activities for them to do. Tourism growth is critical to the future of Scotland and we are lucky to have the highest quality museums and galleries on our doorstep – helping to attract new people and encourage repeat visitors to an area.”
The Museums Think Tank was established by Ministers, to make recommendations on the future direction of the museums sector. The 12 individuals on the group are tasked with considering the key challenges facing the sector.
Museums Galleries Scotland, representing the sector, is advising the Museums Think Tank.
