These items are the first inscriptions to the UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register, an online catalogue established in 2010 to help promote and highlight the UK’s documentary heritage across the UK and the world.
The Register is managed by the UK National Commission for UNESCO and complements the UNESCO Memory of the World International Register, which is a catalogue of documentary heritage of global significance and outstanding universal value.
Four of the ten items are currently in the National Library of Scotland. These items are maps used to create the first atlas of Scotland; film footage of life on the island of St Kilda before it was abandoned by its inhabitants; the earliest dated surviving book printed in Scotland – The Complaint of the Black Knight by John Lydgate – and the Darien Papers outlining Scotland’s doomed attempts to establish an overseas empire in South America.
Nominations to the UK Memory of the World Register are invited: www.unesco.org.uk.
