Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow: Future Jobs Fund Posts

< Back to case study listing

What were the aims of the project?

To provide a skills development opportunity for a young, unemployed person.
To progress the ambition of achieving Accreditation.
To diversify the workforce.

What happened?

Veronica joined RCPSG as a Library and Heritage Assistant in January 2010. Carol parry, Library and Heritage Manager, had gained employment during the 1980s as a Senior Researcher at the Tank Museum, Bovington through a Government Job Creation Scheme and knew of the benefits of such opportunities. So, when MGS advertised the possibility of posts through the Future Jobs Fund she applied to be a participant in the scheme. Veronica, a qualified archivist, had already done a work placement at the college so she was well placed for the Future Jobs Fund opportunity which involved getting all the documentation ready for submission for Accreditation. Achieving accreditation had been a long held aim of RCPSG’s heritage collections but one that couldn’t be achieved without help. Veronica and her guide dog Tansy were very much a part of the library and heritage team. Without Veronica’s help there is no way we would have had time to go through the paperwork necessary for the accreditation process. Veronica has made me realise where we are good at collections management and where we need to improve. To Veronica the scheme has been invaluable. After a long period of unemployment she was at last given the chance to show an employer just what she was capable of and Carol was brilliant at seeing past her disability. She hopes that the experience gained at RCPSG will be an incentive to other employers to also look beyond her visual impairment and view her and her qualifications in the same light as they would view anyone else’s.

What is the wider relevance?

Veronica was one of 58 long term unemployed people that found a training post in Scotland’s Museums and Galleries. Thirteen MGS members were involved in the consortium which provided over 2000 jobs in voluntary sector organisations across Scotland. The post holders were involved in all areas of museum work from learning and access to collections, visitor services to retail.
