Created and co-ordinated by Museums Galleries Scotland, Festival of Museums encourages Scotland’s museums to provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy exciting, entertaining and surprising day or night events at museums and galleries over one weekend. MGS works in partnership with Culture 24 / Museums at Night which takes place over the same weekend.
Festival of Museums seeks to broaden the appeal of museums and galleries and incentivises visitors to learn about and get involved with their local area’s museums and history. We encourage museums and galleries to be ambitious with your plans as exciting events will help you to attract visitors.
In 2015 we are working with Voluntary Arts Scotland to tie in to Voluntary Arts Week and develop partnerships between museums and voluntary arts groups across the artforms.
Registration of Festival of Museum events will open later in October. If you need a little inspiration on what sort of event to run, MGS will be holding Festival of Museums workshops in September/October in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth and Inverness. Visit our training pages for more information.
MGS offers Festival of Museums grants to Accredited museums in Scotland. Grant applications for Festival of Museums 2015 are now open with a deadline of 21 November. Visit our funding pages to find out more information and to apply. If you still need a little inspiration you can also read who successfullly applied for a grant in 2014.
