Are you a member of Museums Galleries Scotland? If not, please read our section on Becoming a member.
You apply for Accreditation by submitting an on-line application form and supporting evidence to your assessing organisation. Museums Galleries Scotland is the assessing organisation for Accreditation in Scotland.
Applications are by invitation only. All Registered Museums have already been invited for Accreditation. For information on museums invited between 2005 and 2009 see When do I apply? New applicants to the scheme should also see When do I apply?
Our Training Programme offers a lot of courses that are useful for helping you prepare for Accreditation and we have information available from a series of Accreditation Workshops that were run for Registered Museums.
Once it has been agreed with the Standards Manager, you will be sent an invitation to apply for Accreditation, which will give you six months to prepare and submit your application. The application form is submitted electronically. In addition, museums will be asked to submit additional documents as supporting evidence. These supporting documents can be submitted either electronically or on paper.
The main document for guiding you through Accreditation is the Accreditation Standard. You can download a copy from MLA’s website - click What We Do, then Raising Standards, followed by Accreditation Scheme.
Do I have to apply electronically?
All museums with internet access must complete the application form electronically. Information on how to access the on-line form will be sent to you with the invitation letter.
If you have no access to the internet at the museum or local library, please contact our Standards Manager.
