The QIS pilot toolkit

This range of materials has been produced for those museums taking part in the QIS pilot, running until February 2010.

These materials will be re-visited at the end of the pilot and developed in line with feedback.

Self-evaluation resource pack

This pack explains what self-evaluation is and sets out eight steps to self-evaluation. Pilotees should use this in conjunction with the QIS framework to support their evaluation of impact measures.

Key messages about self-evaluation

This document contains 18 key messages on good self-evaluation. It may also be helpful in introducing the idea of self-evaluation to others in your organisation.

Examples of evidence

A range of evidence can be provided for self-evaluation. Pilotees should state why the evidence is important, which impact measures it relates to, and how it demonstrates performance against the criteria. This list of examples is a guide to help you start thinking about the sorts of evidence you could use. It is not exhaustive.

Museum staff presentation template

Self-evaluation should involve all staff, and it's therefore important to communicate clearly from the start who, what, shy, how and when. This presentation covers some of the basics of QIS and can be adapted to suit your organisation.

Proforma to gather evidence on impact measures

This sample proforma poses a series of questions on impact measure 1. Following the proforma will enable you to mark your strengths, evidence, and areas for improvement. The method used can also be adapted for other impact measures and their related questions.

Questionnaire to help with impact measure 6

This questionnaire (of 13 questions) can be used to involve staff in the process and help provide evidence for impact measure 6 - Leadership, Ethos and Values.

Public Library Quality Improvement Matrix (PLQIM)

This is a self-evaluation toolkit for libraries, launched by the Scottish Library and Information Council in 2007. The website contains many useful tools and although designed for the libraries sector may help inform self-evaluation using QIS.

How QIS maps to How Good is our Culture and Sport

This diagram demonstrates the strong relationship between the impact measures in QIS and the quality indicators in 'How Good is our Culture and Sport?'. The overview shows how the models are linked.

Presentation on QIS and How Good is our Culture and Sport

This presentation was used in the roadshows for How Good is Our Culture and Sport (HGIOCS), held in September 2009. It covers details of the QIS pilot and links to HGIOCS.

Evidence Log Template

A template to help you record/list what evidence you have collected and how it is important to the overall QIS submission.

QIS Action Plan Template – local authority museums

A sample of how you might want to approach creating the action plan, following the self-assessment process. The sample data in this plan is from a local authority museum service perspective.

QIS Action Plan Template – Independent museums

A sample of how you might want to approach creating the action plan, following the self-assessment process. The sample data included is from an independent museum’s perspective.
