Criteria for applying
If you wish to apply for Recognition you must be a Full member of Museums Galleries Scotland, a non-national museum and be able to show why your collection is of national significance.
Your evidence will include descriptions, information and citations, the details of which you will find in the application form. We have provided space for supporting information in the appendices.
If you are making a partnership application, you will also be expected to demonstrate that all partners and key stakeholders:
- Acknowledge the collection as a coherent unit
- Manage the collection in a coordinated manner
- Acknowledge the collection as a single distributed unit in relevant policy documents: e.g. acquisition and disposal, conservation plan, documentation plan etc.

If you’re not ready to apply
There are many collections that may not be ready to apply whether as part of a partnership or singly. But there will be more rounds, so now is the time to plan, develop working relationships and gather evidence. Remember, there will be one round of applications that opens at the start of each calendar year.
