It has often been said that Scotland’s greatest export has been its people. Varying estimates put the global Scottish diaspora at anywhere between 28 and 100 million. Regardless of the exact figure, there is a large global community with a common interest in their shared Scottish cultural history.
The experience of emigration was one of transition: from homeland to opportunity; adventure; success; or failure. It was one of the defining moments in any personal or family history, irrespective of whether or not the emigration was permanent, voluntary or enforced.
The Scottish Emigration Museum provides the opportunity to convey this remarkable story through bringing together related materials from museums, libraries and archives across the world and presenting them online in one place for the first time.
