Scottish Migration Museum - The Aims

The Scottish Migration Museum has four aims, under the banners of Learning and Participation:

Learning

  • The Scottish Migration Museum will provide opportunities for people of all ages, to learn about the impact that Scottish people have had globally, the contemporary significance of Scottish culture and heritage abroad, and how Scottish culture and heritage have been influenced by international cultures arriving in Scotland.
  • The Scottish Migration Museum will equip people with a suite of learning resources that will offer passionate accounts of Scottish migration themes for present and future generations to learn from and enjoy.

Participation

  • The Scottish Migration Museum will engage with schools and communities, via local museums and galleries, facilitating active participation in a range of activities and events to record, understand, publish and make use of local, regional, national and international historical sources and archives.
  • Following the delivery of the Scottish Migration Museum’s legacy resources, the public will continue to: engage with the initiative via local products (visiting exhibitions, reading publications etc); share experiences via the online museum; and make connections with other individuals and communities in Scotland and throughout the world.

With the support of the participating museums and galleries, people in local communities will be actively engaged in programmes of Scottish migration related activities. Thus, by in-depth engagement with the subject matter, they will increase their knowledge of local and Scottish heritage, the influence of international cultures, and the impact Scotland has had around the world.
