Scottish Migration Museum - The Initiative

Andrew Carnegie - National Library of CongressDrawing on the strength of Scotland’s diverse collections, the Scottish Migration Museum will focus on Scotland's heritage and diverse culture. This will include reminiscences of people’s migration experiences (to and from Scotland), research into the histories of people and their movements, communities and places, languages and dialects, cultural traditions, and collections of items, archives and other materials.

Led by Museums Galleries Scotland, Scottish museums and galleries will deliver a 2 year programme of migration-related learning and participatory activities and events. By doing so, they will work with local communities, including schools, to uncover accounts and experiences of Scottish migration and historical links with countries overseas. The investigations will be informed by the rich collections from Scotland’s museums, libraries and archives: a broad spectrum of materials including records, objects, oral histories and archived images.

In 2014, Scottish Year of Homecoming, locally-curated exhibitions will be presented in a comprehensive online museum, ensuring that the maximum number of people – spanning countries’ borders - can learn from and engage with the Scottish migration experience.
