Why is this case study relevant?

This is an example of continuing commitment to work in partnership following initial meeting in 2004 and subsequent partnership meetings in the years to date.

What were the aims of the project?

• to work with others to help realise the full potential of our collections
• share expertise and knowledge
• explore examples of best practice and develop joint funding proposals
• promote the role of museums, not only regionally but nationally

What happened?

In 2004 the partnership was successful in 3 out of 5 bids for RDCF grant. The three partnerships, Digital Resource Development Team, Scotland and Medicine: Collections and Connections, and Regional Museums Training and Development Partnership have delivered successful projects over the past four years. The purpose of additional funding in early 2008 was to employ a Museums Partnership Officer to further develop the partnership and ESMP ‘brand’ and to co-ordinate the learning from the 3 funded partnerships and to seek further funding opportunities. To date a partnership networking afternoon has been held to celebrate progress and to look ahead, asking partners and project beneficiaries to contribute to the workplan for the future. In September 2008 their Conference launched the partnership website and the afternoon saw the signing, by 25 partner organisations, of a revised Concordat to commit their organisation to future joint working. A further partnership network afternoon is planned for early 2009.

What was learned?

The benefit of having a person in post with a co-ordinating role for the partnership has proved invaluable. It has led to greater information and skills sharing, improved communication and publicity for many of the smaller partner organisations through the new website. The value of networking events has been demonstrated. The formal Concordat signing attracted support from Edinburgh’s Lord Provost and from Linda Fabiani MSP, Minister for Europe, External Affairs & Culture

What is the wider relevance?

To build partnerships is a key Museums Galleries Scotland aim and to encourage partnership formation a key objective. The membership of this partnership has grown as a result of the project activity and is committed to ongoing development activity despite the approach of the end of the funding period.

How was this project promoted?

Through the website www.mages.org.uk and by personal contact by the Museum Partnership Officer.

What type of evaluation was done?

An end of project report covering achievements and progress will be done.
