Many museums have only a modest acquisition budget or no dedicated funds at all. It is important that all purchasing options are considered and that the sector is open about its experiences and examples of good practice.
Museums Galleries Scotland cannot fund acquisitions but there are a number of organisations in the UK which can. Some of our members have been very successful in developing their collections through the National Fund for Acquisitions and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
For more information on sources of funding, go to the Other funders section of this website.
We can support new acquisitions by offering grants to purchase display equipment, provide training or enable good environmental conditions. See the small grants and purchase fund in our Grants section.
