Caring for collections

Managing the care and conservation of collections is one of the most important functions of a museum.

By following good practice and adhering to standards, objects can be stored, displayed and handled in a way that ensures their long term preservation.

In order to support members with this work, Museums Galleries Scotland has developed a number of different resources.

Our series of basic advice sheets covers many common collections care and preventive conservation issues; you can freely download your copies from our collections care advice page, or you can search our advice resources under 'collections'. Our advice sheets are also available on Collections Link.

We also provide members and their curatorial advisers an additional service through the Scottish Conservation Studio (SCS).The conservators have many years experience working with Scottish museums and will give free advice on a wide range of collections care issues. You can contact SCS directly by telephone or email.

Our training programme regularly includes collections-focused courses, all of which specifically take into account Accreditation requirements. The prgramme is regularly advertised on our website and in our e-newsletter Connect.
