Creating content

Whether you are digitising your collection or building an eLearning resource there are some basic considerations which will help you get the best from any digital activity.

  • Who is the audience? (WHO)
  • What do we want to achieve?  (WHAT)
  • How will the product be used?  (WHY)

Having a clear sense of the purpose and rationale behind your digital activity will help you to ensure its success.

Collections management software

There is a wide array of collections management software solutions in the marketplace.  What is important is selecting the right product for the specific needs of your organisation.

We have an arrangement with the Collections Management Network to offer best practice advice to members on all digital aspects of collections management and documentation, as part of the digital advice service. The Collections Link website also contains lots of useful information on all aspects of collections management and see the sites below for specific aspects:

See the sharing collections information page of the collections development section for further advice on collections documentation.

Standards for digital content

Creating resources to meet established standards can help ensure the longevity of your digital content.  It also makes it easier to share your content with others.  The following websites offer some useful best practice advice:

  • JISC Digital Media (formerly TASI) offers best practice advice on the creation and management of digital media, particularly images, moving images and sound.
  • The UKOLN Cultural Heritage resource offers advice on the use of digital resources in the sector.

For advice on documentation requirements for Accreditation see the Accreditation section.
