  1. Our museum is embarking on a digital project.  Where can I find examples and contacts from other museums?

The Museums Computer Group email list is a great forum to find museum contacts working on similar projects, or with experience of specific technologies and software.  Sign up at http://museumscomputergroup.org.uk/email-list/.  Our website also contains case studies across a whole range of projects, so it’s worth checking to see if there is one related to your area of interest.

2.    Where can I get advice on digital standards?

Our Digital Advice Service provides access to best practice advice across a wide variety of digital topics, including digital standards and preservation, collections management systems and collection level descriptions, copyright and social media.  See the Digital Advice Service page for more information and contact details.

3.    Our museum needs a new collections management system. Where can we get advice on what’s available?

As part of our Digital Advice Service, the Collections Management Network offers best practice advice on all aspects of collections management including software.  See the Digital Advice Service page for more information and contact details.

4.    We want to establish a social media presence for our museum, what do we need to do?

There are a number of ways to use social media to engage and share content with your audiences from blogs and Twitter to image and video sharing sites to social networking sites.  While most are free and simple to establish, it’s a good idea to have an understanding of your audiences and what they are looking for from your museum to gauge what the best approach is for your organisation.  UKOLN’s Cultural Heritage website includes lots of resources on social media and the MCG list http://museumscomputergroup.org.uk/email-list/ or just browsing online for good examples can really help shape your plans.

5.    Where can I find a supplier?

MGS is unable to recommend individual suppliers of services or products but you may want to try the MA Suppliers Directory at http://www.museumsassociation.org/suppliers.  The Museums Computer Group email list is also good place to find supplier recommendations.
