Preserving content

We are working with key stakeholders in the sector to offer you best practice advice on issues around digital preservation and the sustainability of your digital content.

We are also active within cross-domain initiatives such as Digital Access Scotland to look at how we can achieve realistic cross-sector policies.

Adopting a common sense approach to issues such as technical standards and file formats, backing-up your data appropriately and your choice of software and hardware can help ensure the longevity of your digital resources.  Use our digital advice service for best practice advice on digital preservation. The following online resources are also useful:

  • UKOLN provides this introduction to digital preservation
  • The Digital Curation Centre provides research and development and promotes good practice advice for the management of digital resources
  • The JISC have recently commissioned UKOLN and ULCC's Digital Archives to produce a new Handbook on the Preservation of Web Resources. The handbook is full of useful information, including strategies to help you decide what to keep, how to keep it and how to ensure ongoing access to it for future generations. Download the Handbook
