Learning and access

Museums and galleries are uniquely placed to offer varied and stimulating learning experiences for all ages. Through access to collections and their interpretation they bring history to life and give insight into our past and Scotland’s heritage.

We believe that everyone has a right to take advantage of these learning opportunities offering a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.

Our Learning and Access Strategy has now been reviewed and replaced by a Learning and Access Framework and action plans.Priorities within the framework are listed below:

Learning & Access Framework – List of Priorities

  1. Developing, understanding and sustaining ‘audiences’ (users and non users)
  2. Access for all - breaking down physical, sensory, intellectual, cultural, geographical, status  and attitudinal barriers
  3. Integrating learning and access as core activities of museums
  4. Improving learning opportunities on offer
  5. Partnership or collaborative working
  6. Evaluation as a tool to improve standards and demonstrate impact
  7. Demonstrating and communicating what we do (advocacy)

We support our members in this area offering advice, publications, resources for sharing good practice on this subject.
