Access in museums and galleries can refer to many different areas of provision, from car parking facilities to interpretation.
By improving provision for those who are considered disabled – for example people with mobility problems, visuals impairment or learning disabilities – other people can also benefit including parents with young children in pushchairs, older people and tourists.
Like all organisations providing public services, access in museums and galleries continue to be a high priority for Museums Galleries Scotland and our members.
Underpinning best practice is inclusion and recognising individual differences and celebrating diversity.
Diversity is valuing everyone as individual whether they are new or old visitors, members or employees
There are various barriers to access in museums details of which can be found on the Barriers to access page in this section. We endeavour to help our members combat these by offering advice, guidance and links to relevant resources to help with programmes and activities. We also offer grants that provide funding support to address access issues. Find more details of our grants schemes in the Funding section on this site.
Also important to take into account when increasing access to museums is the current legislation which may affect you. For more details, visit the Current Legislation page within this section.
The 'explorer app' is just one example of using new technology to support access to museums
