CPD for teachers

Continuing professional development, or CPD, is about increasing attributes, skills, knowledge and understanding, ultimately improving professional practice and allowing individuals to be up to date with developments in the national curriculum and approaches to teaching techniques.

Teachers and educators are obliged to take 35 hours a year of CPD, encompassing a broad range of topics including in the cultural and heritage. Museums therefore have a role to play in developing CPD programmes and events for those in education.

Under the new Curriculum for Excellence (details of which can be found on the Formal Learning page in this section) museums and galleries have more opportunities to engage with the Curriculum priorities.

By illustrating to teachers the rich resources and alternative learning opportunities museums and galleries offer, we can ensure that the sector plays an even more responsive role in learning delivery and make the most of its potential as an enriching and complementary education provider.

Museums Galleries Scotland, in partnership with Glasgow Museums, have produced a Training Pack for a one day CPD training course, to support teachers to deliver the Curriculum for Excellence through learning from objects and paintings. This training pack encourages teachers to deliver object-based learning sessions through the use of 'Hands On: Learning with objects and paintings. A teachers guide'.
