Learning and Access Framework and Priorities Action Plans

The review process

The Learning and Access Strategy review came into conclusion with a discussion forum event held with key practitioners in learning and access on 30 March 2011.

MGS have been working with practitioners to review ‘A National Learning and Access Strategy for Museums and Galleries in Scotland published by MGS in 2005 and which came to the end of it priorities life span in 2009. The review focuses on key challenges, opportunities and priorities going forward.

The review process involved extensive consultation with learning and access practitioners and key partners; desk research, a survey questionnaire and focus group discussion events across the sector.

The review was informed by an understanding of the concerns of the sector gained from contact with and support of members since the publication of A National Learning and Access Strategy for Museums and Galleries in Scotland.  It takes account of issues such as access and inclusion, diversity, social justice and fairness, access to learning, sustainability, and opportunities to address these issues through the Curriculum for Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Partnership working.

Support for Learning and access work remains strong as an advisory group gave their backing to the new priorities in the framework and identified their preferences for action plans to help deliver the prioritries.

Participants at the discussion event agreed the priorities and made contributions and suggestions including types of resources and example of case studies that should help take the framework forward.

Using these priorities, we will aim to continue to stimulate ideas and innovative projects for learning and access work and improve on areas of developments.  We will be developing our web pages to set out our aspirations and ambitions to take forward these priorities.  We will be encouraging partnership working to break down barriers and to promote inclusive practices and wider participation of audiences.

We have also set up an advisory group to help inform on progress and assist with learning and issues and areas of need as they arise.
