Learning and access strategy

Our National Learning and Access Strategy was published in 2005 and has now come to the end of its action plan. The review of the strategy is now underway.

The strategy provided a three-year vision and framework for the development of museum learning and access in Scotland’s museums.

The five objectives contained within the report aim to:

  • Make quality learning and access policies and practices an integral part of museum delivery
  • Promote museums as a central part of the cultural entitlements in terms of delivery and widen and integrate public access
  • Work closely with other education, community and voluntary sector partners to ensure greater integration of services
  • Enhance the profile of museum learning and access and consolidate resources
  • Support museum staff and volunteers in access work

The strategy can be downloaded via the link in the right hand menu on this page.

Strategy review process

In March 2009 we sent out a questionnaire survey to learning and access contacts in Scottish museums to find out what has changed in the sector since the strategy was first published.

In the past few weeks we have been consulting the sector on what the priorities should be for learning and access in museums and galleries for the next three years.

We are now coming to the end of the 2nd stage of the consultation process which aimed at giving members opportunities to further explore themes emerging from the questionnaire survey. We have held events in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

We are now beginning to collate all the views and points from the focus group discussion events and these will be available for you here soon.

If you are still interested, you can still send your comments and views to us. Our contact details can be found in the discussion paper.
