Lifelong learning

Lifelong learning is about developing skills and knowledge throughout life for personal fulfilment, to realise ambitions, enhance quality of life and to have opportunities to participate in the building of society.

The Scottish Government wants to ensure that learning is open to everyone at any age. A range of initiatives are in place aimed at developing and enhancing the skills of Scotland’s people. Programmes have also been set up to support adult literacy and numeracy and provide opportunities to those with special needs.

Lifelong learning emphasises that all users and staff collaborate in and benefit from activities which increase skills, understanding, engagement and which change behaviour and attitudes. Museums can support lifelong learning both through informal and formal learning and through partnership working.
