Planning

We plan all the time as part of our daily lives, whether it be for a holiday, a house move, a family and so on. We identify what we want to do, talk to other people or carry out research, decide where we want to go, how we will pay for it and how long it will take.

In a similar way museums and galleries should also plan what they do. In the simplest terms how can you achieve success for your museum if you have not first envisioned what that success will look like, and plotted the steps and resources that will take you there? Planning:

  • provides direction to chosen activities
  • allocates resources according to agreed priorities
  • brings staff together in a combined sense of purpose towards a common goal
  • measures progress and success

Planning occurs at different levels, be it local authority community planning, strategic, forward or operational planning, or individual project planning. This section of the website will help you to understand when and how different types of planning should be carried out, the processes involved, and how effective planning can impact on the success of your organisation.
