How to use the visitor information you gather

The visitor information that you record can potentially provide you with quite detailed information about how your services are used and valued.

You can use this to inform your forward planning. For example if you know a large number of families are visiting your museum then you might consider developing the range of facilities or exhibitions you provide for them.

You could also use the information to:

  • develop a marketing strategy – are there under-represented groups you wish to attract?
  • report against the Statutory Performance Indicator (SPI) for museums
  • generate positive media coverage for your museum

If your museum is part of a museums forum you could even agree to record the same information across the same period and in the same way across a local authority area.  This would establish a benchmark against which to measure future activity and development.

Most important of all the information you gather should be suited to its purpose, and be accurate and consistent.
