Our research and evidence framework

The reason for developing the research and evidence framework

There is currently a lack of robust and consistently gathered evidence for the museum sector.

Museums Galleries Scotland needs to address the lack of robust evidence in the sector in order to

  • assess whether our strategies and programmes are facilitating development for the sector
  • better focus our strategies, programmes and grants
  • improve our knowledge of the sector so that we are better able to advocate the case for museums
  • develop and promote our services for better efficiency and effectiveness

Having evidence readily available will enable Museums Galleries Scotland to be an even more proactive and responsive organisation.

Museums Galleries Scotland Vision for the Research and Evidence Framework

Museums Galleries Scotland’s vision is a robust and comprehensive evidence base for the sector.

The Research and Evidence Framework sets out our approach to research and collecting evidence. It includes

  • The principles underpinning the framework
  • The priority areas for the framework
  • The scope of the framework
  • How we will present and store research findings
  • Our review timetable for the framework

The Research and Evidence Framework was revised in September 2009. Please click on the link on the right of this page to read the revised Research and Evidence Framework.

We have produced a monitoring report which lists completed pieces of MGS work which have a research or evaluation element and details which of the Research and Evidence Framework priorities and indicators that they have met and how.
