Developing Volunteers and Volunteer Managers

The role of volunteers is of extreme importance to the delivery of services within the museums sector.

Many museums in Scotland are entirely run and staffed by volunteers. For others, volunteers have an important role supporting the work of paid staff.

Larger organisations have designated volunteer co-ordinators or managers. In others it falls to curators, museum officers, education staff or other volunteers.  Regardless of their title they all manage, support, co-ordinate and organise volunteers.

Attention needs to be paid to the support, development and recognition of these volunteers and their managers.

Training Volunteers

The Volunteer Training Bank was developed as part of the Renaissance London programme and has been updated and moved to the Museum of London's website. The project provides a programme of free training for volunteers and the training materials are available to download for museums who want to run their own in-house training.
