About our Board

Our Board of Directors is made up of elected and co-opted members.  Elected Directors are nominated each year by full members of Museums Galleries Scotland and formally elected at our AGM.  From time to time the Board will co-opt an individual to take advantage of their particular skills base.

The make up of the Board is dictated by our Memorandum & Articles of Association which states that it “shall not be less than nine and shall not exceed seventeen”.  As vacancies arise members are invited on an annual basis to submit nominations under the following categories;

  • A Chairman
  • Two Local Authority directors i.e. Councillors
  • Up to three Local Authority Curator Directors
  • Up to two Independent Directors
  • One University Director
  • One Regimental Director
  • Up to two National Museums Directors

Directors are elected for an initial term of three years and then may be recommended for a second term so can serve six years in total.  Co-opted Directors may only serve for one term of four years.

If you have any general questions about our Board, the election process or would like to have an informal chat about becoming an MGS Board member please contact the Executive Assistant.
