Working with the Scottish Government

Museums Galleries Scotland is the main conduit for Scottish Government funding to the sector. We distribute this funding through our annual main and small grants schemes (see our grants pages).

We also manage programmes on the Scottish Government’s behalf which have specific funding streams associated with them. Currently we are working on the Recognition scheme which aims to recognise collections of national significance held in non-national museums and galleries. For more information on this programme, please see the Recognition scheme section.

In addition, we work in partnership with the Scottish Government to develop MGS programmes and projects such as Choices for Change, A toolkit for exploring alternative methods of delivering services.

The Regional Development Challenge Fund project and associated funding was launched in 2003 and aimed to increase partnership working in the museums sector. Further information on this can be found on the RDCF page.

Details of previous projects we have worked on with our members can be found on the Previous Scottish Government funded projects page.

As an independent charitable trust, we also lobby and advocate on the sector’s behalf and aim to communicate the Scottish Government’s priorities through to our membership. Information on other Scottish Government initiatives, policies and projects we are working on can also be seen in the menu to the left.
