Approaching disposals

This two-part programme is designed to help your museum identify and implement realistic disposal actions over a 4-month period.

Event information

Date: 27 June & 30 October, 2024

Time: 10:00 – 12:30

Organiser: MGS

Venue: Online

This two-part event, hosted by Museums Galleries Scotland and Collections Trust, will bring together a small group of museums, each with a real-life disposal issue they need help with. For example, perhaps your museum is struggling to identify an appropriate method of disposal or you’re not sure how to document the deaccessioning process.

In session 1 (27 June) these issues will be discussed, with opportunities for other attendees to ask questions, share their own experience, and make suggestions for possible action. Session 2 (30 October) will be a chance to share progress on your museum’s actions, as well as discuss any barriers you’ve encountered.

  • Session 1 – Thursday 27 June, 10:00-12:30
  • Session 2 – Wednesday 30 October, 10:00-12:30

Please note by signing up to session 1 you will automatically be signed up to the follow up session on 30 October at 10am. We encourage each museum to send two members of their team if possible.

Preparation for session 1:

  • You will be required to write a short summary of your disposal issue when you register, which will be shared with the group before the session to help everyone prepare for the discussion.
  • Familarise yourself with the revised MA disposals guidance. You might also find it useful to have this available to refer to during the session.

The disposal issue can be ethical or practical but please note we are not able to give legal advice.

To encourage honest discussion, these sessions will not be recorded. These sessions will be hosted on Zoom. Live captions will be available.
