What stops some families visiting museums? Hurdles to participation include practical barriers, social and attitudinal barriers, constraints on school resources and short-term funding. Understanding these barriers is the first step towards being able to put measures in place to mitigate them.
Join us for an informal virtual briefing and discussion session to hear an update about our Hurdles to participation for children, families and young people visiting museums: literature review, which was first published in 2016.
You can also find out more about the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award. Launched in 2004, the Award recognises the venues that are most welcoming, fun, and accessible for families. Previous winners include Experience Barnsley, Young V&A and Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum.
In this session, you will:
- provide an update about the barriers family audiences face accessing museums, heritage and cultural sites.
- share key trends and developments in family and young people audience behaviour since COVID.
- share a case study from the winner of the Best Small Museum and overall winner of the Family Friendly Museum Award – Experience Barnsley Museum & Discovery Centre. They will share inspiring examples of their work with families, plus how the Award has impacted the museum.
