World War 1 Fund

Apply to the MGS World War I Fund to support commemorative work with Scotland’s communities.​

About the fund

This fund is designed to support museums to work with communities to explore the broad impact and legacy of World War I on the families and communities of Scotland and its continuing resonance on modern life. We want to encourage applications that demonstrate innovative approaches to commemoration and are particularly keen to support:

  • collaborative projects
  • projects with a strong creative arts component, including projects that involve working with artists
  • projects that encourage inquiry and understanding about the war
  • projects which engage younger generations
  • projects which will improve access to WWI collections


Any organisation that runs an Accredited Museum in Scotland can apply.


Organisations can apply for between £1,000 and £10,000 (up to 75% of total project costs). Projects involving collaborations with artists and/or partnerships are eligible for up to £20,000.

When to apply

We are running two round of this fund in 2016/17. The first round closed in September 2016. The second will close on 17 February 2017

Assessment criteria

We’ll assess your application in terms of:

  • how well the project demonstrated an innovative approach to exploring the broad impact and legacy of WWI
  • how well the project would engage with families and communities and support local commemorations
  • how well the project meets the aims of the National Strategy Going Further
  • project feasibility, from a planning, people and budgetary perspective
  • how well the project would contribute to our priorities for this fund

What we can't fund

  • Acquisitions
  • Projects that have begun or which will begin before our decision date
  • Maintenance and like-for-like replacements
  • Extension or repetition of projects we’ve funded before – unless the new work will bring new benefits
  • Salaries for existing staff – unless the work is on top of normal hours

Conditions of award

World War 1 Fund award recipients must:

  • use the award for the approved purposes only
  • seek our written permission to make any changes to the project
  • let us know immediately if you find you won't be able to spend all or part of the award
  • complete the project within 30 months of the award being made
  • submit final claims within two months of project completion
  • return any unused funds
  • advertise all new posts externally and tender for goods and services over £5,000 to be paid for by the award
  • carry out all project work to the highest standards and, where relevant, use suitably qualified individuals such as ICON-accredited conservators
  • acknowledge our financial support via press activity and branding
  • submit progress reports and evaluations by agreed dates – failure to do so will lead to the award being reclaimed
  • be prepared to share the learning from your project at our request
  • manage the project safely and effectively
  • comply with the National Guidance for Child Protection in Scotland (2014), if required
