About the Role

The Museum of the Isles tells the story of Clan Donald – from the early Scots and the powerful Lordship of the Isles to the Jacobite Rebellions and the breakdown of the Clan system. The final galleries focus on the crofting system and the story of emigration from Skye and the Highlands which has created a vast diaspora linked to Clan Donald.

The Museum of the Isles has been accredited since 2008 and is seeking reaccreditation in May 2024.

The mentor will be required to share their expertise and networks, be committed to their own professional development with at least 3 years’ experience working in museums at curator/manager level.

The mentor will be expected to make an in person visit to the Museum, and to attend quarterly meetings of the Museum and Heritage Committee (online). Availability for scheduled communications or online meetings with the Museum Manager between these times would be beneficial.

The function of this role is to support the Museum Manager and wider team with the review of policies, plans & procedures required for Accreditation. This will include supporting Accreditation submissions and providing a report for Museum Galleries Scotland.

Commitment Required

A minimum of  an annual in-person meeting at Museum of the Isles in the Isle of Skye to meet with staff and volunteers and attendance at (online) quarterly meetings of the Museum and Heritage Committee.

Plus availability for support and advice to Museum at scheduled times to be agreed by the mentor.

Usually a commitment of 3 years, with regular reviews to ensure the relationship is working.
