About the Role

Would you like to play a vital role in the Treasure Trove system in Scotland?

Scottish Ministers are seeking to appoint two members to the Scottish Archaeological Finds Allocation Panel (SAFAP).

SAFAP provides advice to the King’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer (KLTR) about archaeological items discovered in Scotland, recommending whether the artefacts should be acquired for the nation, where they should be allocated and if a payment should be made to the finder.

We are looking for one professional member and one independent member. Ideally candidates for the professional member role should have relevant experience in practical archaeology, and the independent candidate should have experience of metal detecting and knowledge of the system. In addition, the successful applicants will be confident and engaging communicators, able to work with different colleagues and with the capacity to give the role the time commitment required. If appointed, you will be expected to take up post on 28 July 2025.

Appointment as a member is unpaid, however all directly related travel and subsistence costs, as well as reasonable dependants’ carer costs incurred in carrying out the duties of the appointment, will be reimbursed.

Further information on the role and the panel can be found in the applicant information pack.
