About the Role

Welcome Assistants form our front of house team dedicated to the visitor experience and every-day running of Collective, including work in gallery spaces, our shop, and coffee Kiosk. You will also support exhibition previews and other events, as well as supporting donations, audience surveys, and maintaining health and safety standards.

Collective operates a seasonal opening model.

Summer (April – September) 7.5 hours per day, 9.30am—5.30pm, with a half-hour unpaid break.

Winter (October – December) 6.5 hours per day, 9.30am – 4.30pm, with a half-hour unpaid break.

Closed period (January – February) We cannot offer guaranteed hours, but if preferred, we can offer an annualised hours contract.

Additional evening and weekend work will be necessary on occasion; this work will be paid at the normal hourly rate and will be additional to the 2 days per week. The role will involve at least one regular weekend day.

The Welcome Assistant’s hours are Wednesday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm. During the closed period in January and February each year we cannot offer guaranteed hours. We may be able to offer ad hoc paid work to support events etc. but this is not guaranteed. Employment continues during January and February each year, and if preferred, we can offer an annualised hours contract based on 10 months guaranteed hours paid in 12 equal monthly instalments.

Skills an Experience

Essential 

  • Experience of working with the public.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail, punctuality and initiative.
  • Ability to communicate enthusiastically with visitors about Collective, its artists, site and exhibitions.
  • Ability to engage with diverse people, particularly where English may not be a first language.
  • Ability to engage with visitors who are new to contemporary art.
  • An interest in, and knowledge of, contemporary visual arts and heritage.


Desirable 

  • Previous gallery or museum experience.
  • Experience of reception, retail or other customer service roles.
  • Hospitality experience /experience of using a coffee machine.
  • Knowledge of the local area.
  • Sensitivity to the nuances of operating a site with a complex history.
  • Awareness of access issues and disabilities.
  • Awareness of Health & Safety requirements
