ESSM Steering Group: Project Documentation

Two metal coins with a person on one side and a pineapple on the other. Text "Barbados Pineapple Penny. The pineapple symbolises imperial trade in tropical luxuries facilitated through chattel slavery. Commissioned 1788 by the Barbados plantation owner and enslaver, Sir Phillip Gibbs. Now part of The Hunterian Museum collection. The depiction of an African serving the Crown as obedient, civilised and 'improved', responds to images of an enslaved man in manacles used by Anti-slavery campaigners"
