Festival of Museums

All museums and galleries in Scotland are invited to take part in the Festival of Museums. The next Festival of Museums will take place from 19 to 21 May 2017. Festival of Museums is a project created and coordinated by Museums Galleries Scotland. The weekend coincides with Museums at Night.

The purpose of Festival of Museums is twofold. It offers museums the opportunity to plan events that raise their profile amongst their existing and potential visitors and stakeholders. It supports museums to develop skills in planning and delivering sustainable and enterprising events.  

Why take part?

You can choose what type of event you wish to stage. Consider your target audience and develop an event that will be entertaining to them. Plan how you will market your event to your target audience.

Some of the benefits of taking part include: 

  • Support from MGS staff 
  • The potential to benefit from added publicity on top of what you generate yourself. Each year we select a number of PR highlight events to feature in the local and national PR campaign. To be a potential PR highlight museums respond to our information requests promptly to avoid disappointment.
  • Event listings on www.festivalofmuseums.com. MGS also shares event listings with Culture24 and other listings outlets.
  • Access to free poster templates and banners to display outside your venue
  • Access to a free Festival of Museums toolkit
  • Blogs and webinars to help you plan and deliver a successful event
  • You receive data gathered from your visitors – data which you can use for future event planning.

Museums wishing to take part in Festival of Museums 2017 should register their events using the form below. The initial deadline for registration has passed, but you can still register your event and benefit from the national publicity around the Festival.

PR and publicity for your event

MGS is working with Stripe Communications on the PR and publicity around the Festival this year. MGS & Stripe have developed a toolkit to help your museum get the most from this year’s festival and maximise your local media coverage and social media engagement. It gives hints and tips around photography, social media and PR and contains handy templates for press releases, photo calls and permission slips.

We've also produced templates for you to use for posters and leaflets.

Festival of Museums Evaluation

Scotinform Ltd has been appointed by Museum Galleries Scotland to evaluate the 2017 Festival of Museums. The evaluation will be used to measure the impact of this year’s Festival and to help plan for the future. The evaluation will be based on feedback from event visitors and participating venues.

Your co-operation is vital to ensuring that we get enough information to conduct the evaluation properly. All event organisers will be sent a report with details of the responses by visitors to your event. This report contains valuable information unique to you that you can use to plan your future events.
