Bog Born: the cultural and material history of peatlands in Scotland and beyond
Event information
Date: 18th November
Time: 9am – 4:45pm
Organiser: National Museums Scotland
Venue: National Museum of Scotland
Cost: Free
This free one-day symposium at the National Museum of Scotland, in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, brings together curators and researchers, crofters and landowners, conservationists and business leaders. The event will explore the many ways peat has been used, understood and valued – and how these changing perspectives are represented in museums.
Speakers from Scotland and beyond will invite us to think about peat not simply as a landscape or as a resource, but as material evidence of a rich cultural history. As peatlands are becoming more present in our carbon accounting, it’s a good time to ask: what can museum collections tell us about the past, present and future of bogs?
