Understanding Treasure Trove

Event Information

Date: 22 October 2026

Time: 10.00am-12.00pm

Organiser: Museums Galleries Scotland

Speakers: Marcus Dean and Emily Freeman

Venue: Online, Zoom.

Join Marcus Dean, Head of Treasure Trove Policy at KLTR, and Emily Freeman, Head of Treasure Trove Operations, for an introduction to Scotland’s Treasure Trove system and the updated Code of Practice, launched in March 2026.

While the legal basis for Treasure Trove remains unchanged, the Code updates the procedures, guidance, and language used across the system. In this two-hour online session, attendees will learn about the history and legal framework of Treasure Trove, the roles of the people who administer the system, and how decisions are made about whether finds are claimed or disclaimed.

The session will explore the Code of Practice for Museums in detail, including how museums should support members of the public who want to report a find and how museums can apply to acquire Treasure Trove cases. The session will also cover the Treasure Trove Unit’s engagement work and ways museums can get involved. It is relevant to museums across Scotland and to staff or volunteers in any role who may respond to public enquiries, support find reporting or apply for Treasure Trove cases.

Who is it for?

This webinar is open to anyone working or volunteering in Scotland’s Museum sector who would like to understand more about how they could engage with the Treasure Trove Unit (TTU). This could be to understand the changes to the Code, acquire archaeological finds, support engagement programmes, or being informed enough to be able to respond to and support the public.

Please note this session will be recorded.

This meeting will be hosted on Zoom. Live captions will be available.
